The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York stands today at the most critical crossroads in its modern history. After eight years of intense internal friction, administrative deadlocks, legal disputes, and painful divisions, the New York Greek Diaspora is sending a resounding and non-negotiable message: the era of conflict has definitively passed.

This Friday, June 26, the newly elected board members are called upon to make a decision of historical responsibility by electing Christos Vournas to the office of President. Mr. Vournas’s candidacy is not merely a choice of an individual, but the only reliable guarantee for the reconstruction, institutional stability, and unity that organized Hellenism so desperately needs.
Christos Vournas’s path in public service is not a casual engagement, but a 37-year journey filled with consistency, integrity, and selfless contribution. From the historic Arcadian Society of New York "Geros tou Morea," where he served as president, to the Pan Arcadian Federation of America and his tenure at the Federation of Hellenic Societies itself as treasurer and board member, Mr. Vournas has proven in practice that he possesses the administrative competence and composure to manage crises. In a recent statement to the Hellenic Daily News, Mr. Vournas emphasized that his priority is the immediate reconstruction of the Federation following the crisis. With a structured and unifying message, he calls on all sides to set aside personal ambitions and petty differences, focusing instead on the collective good.

The results of the June 14, 2026, elections yielded a 21-member board where the balance of power is apparent. According to Mr. Vournas, this should not be an obstacle, but an opportunity for a new, democratic governance. As he stated characteristically at the recent press conference at the Arcadian Society’s offices in Long Island City, there are no camps for him. The 21 board members constitute a body that must work as one unit. His promise is to stand before them not as a ruler, but as the guarantor of a fair and unimpeachable process, where the voice of every society will be heard and every member will feel proud of the Federation's leadership.
One of the cornerstones of his program is the radical modernization of the Federation’s charter. Mr. Vournas recognizes that the old, dysfunctional charter repeatedly acted as a source of friction. He proposes drafting a new, more flexible, representative, and fair charter, which will be accompanied by a detailed internal operating manual. With his long experience in business management, he insists on the need to establish clear procedures—so-called "manual procedures"—that will prevent the repetition of past mistakes and institutionally shield the organization against arbitrariness.
The candidate president places special emphasis on utilizing the Stathakion Cultural Center. This building, which has remained in a state of abandonment for years, must be transformed back into the lungs of Hellenism in Astoria. Mr. Vournas is not limited to simple renovations, but envisions a radical upgrade of the facilities, including the potential addition of a floor, so that the Stathakion can become a modern, welcoming hub for all Greek-Americans. This is a symbolic yet essential project that will restore the Federation’s prestige in the eyes of the community and American society.

At the center of his strategy is also the youth of the Diaspora. Christos Vournas declares categorically that young people should not remain on the sidelines. On the contrary, he seeks to act as a mentor, opening the path for capable and active young Greek-Americans to gain the necessary stage and opportunity to take the helm. He believes in synthesizing experience with the dynamism of the younger generation, creating a bridge between generations that will ensure the continuity of Hellenism in America for years to come.
This candidacy is supported by the entirety of the Diaspora. From the Arcadian Society, which expresses its absolute confidence in the man who represented them with consistency, to ordinary Greek-Americans who recognize in him a form of stability. Mr. Vournas did not fail to express his thanks to all those who worked hard to reach this day, mentioning by name Peter Geratsoulis for the excellent work of the Transparency Committee, as well as Demos Siokis and Nomiki Kastana for their contribution to maintaining consensus.
This Friday, the board members will face the ballot box. The message they must send to the Diaspora is clear. There is no longer room for excuses or for prioritizing personal interest over the common good. As Mr. Vournas warned, whoever chooses to remain attached to outdated perceptions and petty matters will be judged strictly by the community as a whole. History is written by those who have the courage to take the next step.
The election of Christos Vournas to the presidency of the Federation is the guarantee for a path free from the shadows of the past. With his vision for a Federation that is open, transparent, and effective, Mr. Vournas promises to restore the name and glory of the institution. The Diaspora, united and determined, supports him and looks forward to seeing the organization return to the forefront, serving the values, traditions, and future of Hellenism in the United States. It is time for action, time for unity, and time for us all to move forward into a new, brilliant era. Christos Vournas is the answer we were seeking and the leader our history deserves.
