![]() Today in the U.S. we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day , a national federal holiday, marking the birthday of this great man and someone who championed our AHEPA ideals as he fought bigotry and bias. It is observed on the third Monday of January around his birthday of January 15.
Dr. King was an American Baptist minister, activist , humanitarian and a leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement among many other significant things. He was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, David Thoreau, Bayard Rustin, Leo Tolstoy, Benjamin Mays and others but brought his unique perspective to help make this a better world.
As we all know Archbishop Iakovos of blessed memory and a major AHEPA supporter was the only major non African American religious figure who marched on Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The short video below is of an event I sponsored five years ago on the 10th year Anniversary of Archbishop Iakovos passing and the 50th year of the March on Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was a Hellenic and Philhellenic multicultural event and what AHEPA and our great Empire District has always stood for. Co- Chairs of the event were Brother John Catsimatidis, member of the Delphi Chapter #25, and Lloyd Williams, President of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce. May the memory of both great men be eternal.
