The story of a Greek American entrepreneur who turned his passion into one of America's most sought-after wines.

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA — In a world where wineries and brands come and go, the success of AXIOS is no accident. In the heart of Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme, this winery stands out not only for the quality of its wines but also for the Greek soul that permeates it. Behind the label is Gus Kalaris, a Greek American businessman who successfully transferred the profound Greek concept of "filotimo" into a bottle of wine.

Gus Kalaris, owner and founder of AXIOS, is a man with deep roots in Greek tradition. Although born in Washington, D.C., his love for his homeland and his passion for creation led him to establish a winery in 1999 that would be "worthy" (the meaning of "Axios" in Greek) of his heritage. In collaboration with the award-winning winemaker Bob Egelhoff, his vision was to produce a wine that combines the refined structure of Bordeaux with the rich, fruity expression of Napa Valley.
The Seductive Profile of AXIOS Cabernet Sauvignon
The winery's flagship wine, the AXIOS Cabernet Sauvignon, is the epitome of this philosophy. It is produced in extremely limited quantities, classifying it as a "cult" wine, meaning it has a passionate following and is sold primarily through a waiting list.
Tasting it reveals its complexity: a deep ruby color, intense aromas of ripe black fruits like blackcurrant and plum, with notes of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla from aging in new French oak barrels. On the palate, it is rich, with velvety tannins and a long, lingering finish.
Expanding the Family: From "Worthy" to "Telios"
The success of AXIOS led to the creation of a series of equally high-quality labels, each with its own character and unique story:

Worthy: A Cabernet Sauvignon that offers a more accessible yet equally high-quality version of the winery's philosophy. Kalaris created it to be "worthy" of everyday enjoyment, without compromising on quality.
Truth: Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir of excellent structure and finesse. This label is an ode to the "truth" of the terroir and the grape's ability to express its identity.
Philotimo: This label is a tribute to Gus Kalaris's heritage and belief system. It is a Xinomavro-Cabernet Sauvignon blend in cooperation with Greece’s Alpha Estate. It is the first wine ever produced from a blend of Napa and Greek vineyards, marking a historic first in winemaking.
Telios: The name of this label, which means "complete" or "perfect" in Greek, reflects the pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that is aged for an extended period, highlighting its mature and complex character.
Handcrafted Production and Greek Heritage
The philosophy behind the production is clear: small batches, handcrafted work, and meticulous attention to detail. The experienced vintner Kalaris, along with his vineyard and winemaking team, oversee every stage of production, from the careful selection of grapes to the aging in high-quality French oak barrels.

The AXIOS winery is not an ordinary place in Napa Valley. It is living proof that dedication, passion, and deep roots can create something truly extraordinary. Gus Kalaris isn't just selling wine. He is offering an experience—a bottle filled with the "filotimo" and the Greek soul that guides him.
