The recent 2025 Hellenic Proficiency Certificate Award Ceremony, held in the heart of Manhattan, in the HIOTIS hall of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, was far more than a bureaucratic procedure. It was a deeply moving event, living proof of the Diaspora’s unwavering effort to preserve an untarnished connection to their roots.
The Consulate General of Greece in New York, through its Public Diplomacy Office, organized this significant ceremony, honoring the hard work, dedication, and above all, the love shown by the students for the Greek language. The awarding of certificates for the A1 and A2 levels marked the success of dozens of young individuals who successfully passed the examinations, confirming not only their competence but also their devotion to tradition.
The Spiritual Dimension of Heritage
The gravity of the moment was profoundly enhanced by the presence of Archbishop of America, Mr. Elpidophoros. In his address, the Archbishop lent a universal and timeless tone, reminding all attendees of the invaluable worth of the Greek language: "the one in which the Gospels were written and the wisdom of ages was imprinted." These words were not just a reference to history; they were a reminder of the fundamental spiritual dimension carried by our Greek heritage, which forms the cradle of Western civilization. The ability to read the original texts remains the key to understanding both Ancient and Modern Hellenism.
In this context, the Consul General of Greece in New York, Ms. Ifigeneia Kanara, warmly congratulated the students on their achievement. Their success is collective: it is the result not only of their own labor but also of the patience and selfless love of the parents, who stand as staunch supporters on what she aptly noted is often a demanding journey. The Consul General did not fail to highlight the critical role of the educators. These ministers of Hellenic Education, with their passion and consistency, keep the flame of Greek Pedagogy alive abroad, contributing decisively to the preservation of our language and culture.
Statistics and International Recognition
The Education Coordinator, Ms. Dimitra Patronidou, presented the statistics of this year's exams, offering an objective view of the phenomenon's dynamic. The global participation in the Hellenic Language examinations—a figure that reflects a growing desire within the Diaspora to embrace their heritage—is impressive.
The Hellenic Language Certificate, instituted in 1998 and supervised by the Ministry of Education, stands as the official state certification of proficiency in the Greek language internationally. Its administration across 160 testing centers worldwide, 21 of which are located in the USA, underscores the geographical breadth of the Greek presence.

Particularly significant is the recognition the certificate has gained in the United States. Its inclusion in the Seal of Biliteracy program across thirteen States, including the State of New York, represents a major institutional victory. This step elevates the standing of the Greek language within the American educational framework, offering students of the Diaspora the possibility of official recognition for their Hellenic knowledge within the U.S. educational system.
In the May 2025 exams, 11,178 candidates participated globally. Notably, the Examination Center of the Consulate General of Greece in New York (Code 10004) recorded 293 participations, confirming both the large volume of the Greek-American community in the region and their relentless effort to maintain and spread the Greek language, despite the challenges of daily life in a multicultural environment.
The Voice of the New Generation: Dionysios Pei Chen
The most touching and hopeful moment of the ceremony was undoubtedly the speech given by the youngest successful student, Dionysios Pei Chen. With an enthusiastic and lively manner, the young man shared his reasons for learning Greek, honoring his roots and specifically his grandmother from Kefalonia. Through his personal testimony, Mr. Pei Chen demonstrated in the simplest and most sincere way that language functions as the primary carrier of culture. He served as a living reminder to everyone how deep and vibrant the connection to the motherland remains when transmitted through language. His success is the seal that the 'flame' will not be extinguished.
Language as a Force of Unity
The overarching message emerging from this ceremony is clear: the Greek language, with its long history and undeniable spiritual value, remains a strong pole of attraction, teaching, and, above all, unity for the Greeks of the Diaspora.
In an era of globalization and rapid change, preserving the language ensures continuity. It is not just a school subject; it is the bridge connecting the contributions of ancestors with the aspirations of their descendants. The Hellenic Proficiency Ceremony in New York highlights the role of the Consulate General and the broader institutional framework as guardians of this heritage.
Hellenism outside its narrow geographical boundaries is not a matter of mere nostalgia. It is a dynamic, living reality which, as demonstrated by the students and their parents in Manhattan, is eager to invest in its own future, one word at a time. This institutionalized and internationally recognized effort ensures that the wisdom and culture inscribed in this language will continue to inspire succeeding generations.
