Transforming the Seat of Faith into a Beacon of Love: The Grand Celebration on December 8, 2025
By:Mara Christou
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOARCH) was festively adorned, welcoming a multitude of faithful, clergy, and dignitaries for its annual Christmas Open House on Monday, December 8, 2025. This now-established event is more than just a gathering; it is a dynamic affirmation of the unity, faith, and cultural heritage of the Greek Diaspora (Omogenia) in the United States.
His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America personally welcomed families, community representatives, and members of the clergy. The atmosphere was filled with joy, as the melodies of traditional Greek and American Christmas carols filled the halls, while the impressive Christmas decorations created a warm and festive setting.
International Presence and Distinguished Guests

This year's Open House carried particular weight, thanks to the presence of high-ranking representatives from the Hellenic and Cypriot Republics, underscoring the strong relationship between the Diaspora and the Motherland. Among the special guests who honored the event were:
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, responsible for the Greeks Abroad, Harry Theoharis.
The Consul General of Greece in New York, Iphigenia Kanara.
The Consul General of Cyprus in New York, Kyriakos Pogiatzis.
The diplomatic representatives expressed their delight in participating in this joyous celebration, exchanging wishes and singing carols alongside the Archbishop and attendees, enhancing the sense of shared identity and brotherhood.
The Archbishop's Message: The Power of Physical Connection

In his address to the gathered crowd, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros shared his profound joy. He emphasized the importance of seeing so many faithful flock to "the center of their faith in America, their Archdiocese," to celebrate the Nativity of Christ alongside the clergy and the dedicated staff.
In an era dominated by the digital world, the Archbishop particularly highlighted the value of physical presence and connection. He characterized this year's celebration as an opportunity to be truly together, to converse, to share embraces, and to step away for a time from the isolation imposed by technology. The return to community and interaction constitute, according to the Archbishop, the essence of the Christian faith and humanity.
Harry Theoharis: “The Diaspora Makes Our Motherland Stronger”

One of the most moving moments of the event was the speech by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Harry Theoharis, who extended warm thanks for the invitation. Mr. Theoharis conveyed a message that strengthened the bridge between Greece and the Diaspora.
"Greece, the land, is finite," the Deputy Minister emphatically stated, "but the values—and sharing those values, sharing the love, sharing our faith in the Orthodox Church—are truly limitless. This is what makes us all Greek."
His message culminated in a powerful recognition of the Diaspora's role: "You, carrying the torch and the flame of the Greek spirit within you, are making our Motherland bigger, better, and stronger. For this, I want to thank you." His speech concluded with his warmest wishes for a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.
The Tree Lighting and the Angels of the Diaspora

Earlier the same day, the Archdiocese had been filled with the angelic voices of children from local Greek-American Day Schools, as part of the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Archbishop Elpidophoros offered his sincere thanks to the students and teachers for their preparation and their sweet singing, hailing the young protagonists as the future of the Diaspora.
Also welcoming the children were the Archdiocesan District Chancellor, Fr. Elias Villis, and the Director of Education for the Archdiocese, Fr. Gregory Stamkopoulos.
Participating Schools:

The active participation of the schools confirms the vitality of Greek education in America. The participating schools were:
The Cathedral School of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity
St. Demetrios Cathedral
A. Fantis School of Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral
William Spyropoulos School of Saint Nicholas Shrine Church
Dimitrios & Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School of Holy Cross Church

The Open House event concluded by reaffirming the Archdiocese's role not only as a religious center but also as a platform for culture, unity, and national pride for all Greeks in America. This gathering laid the groundwork for a blessed and hopeful Christmas season for the entire Diaspora.
