ASTORIA, NY — The Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria is cementing its reputation as a powerhouse for contemporary theater with its latest production: the world premiere of "The Spinnerets." The highly anticipated thriller officially opened on Thursday, January 29, and is set to run through February 8, 2026, at the Center’s intimate NEWTOWN stage.
Newsroom
"The Spinnerets," written by Douglas DuBrin and directed by Anthony Logan Cole, is a gripping 90-minute dystopian thriller. The story plunges the audience into a dark reality where five troubled strangers find themselves trapped together. Forced into a dangerous social experiment, the group must navigate a web of tension and distrust to find a way to escape.
The production arrived at the Newtown stage as a fully realized play following a successful staged reading at the Center. Its development reflects the ongoing vision of Artistic Director Alexandros Ammohostianos to foster innovative storytelling and culturally-driven programming that pushes the boundaries of traditional theater.
This premiere follows a string of sold-out hits at the Hellenic Cultural Center’s second stage, including:
- "Hour of Darkness": Directed by Samuel Adams, starring Katlyn Schirard.
- "I Want a Country": Directed by Ioanna Katsarou, featuring original music by Broadway composer Peter Douskalis.
With "The Spinnerets," the Center continues its collaborative spirit, partnering with Painted Pistachio Productions and the FAMA Theater Group NY (THESPIS Cultural Center) to bring this new work to life.
