According to reports, the acclaimed actress drew her last breath at the "Agios Savvas" hospital, where she had been hospitalized in recent days following a decline in her health. This followed her admission to "Attikon" hospital on June 15 due to a serious respiratory condition.

With a stellar career spanning over half a century, Maro Kontou was the epitome of elegance, grace, and immense talent. Throughout her artistic journey, she starred in approximately 60 films and 90 theatrical plays, leaving an indelible mark on the Golden Age of Greek cinema and theatre.

Born Marianthi (Maro) Kontou on June 21, 1934, in the Athens neighborhood of Koukaki, she discovered her passion for the arts early on. She studied at the prestigious Koula Pratsika Dance School and, from 1953 to 1958, participated in the Ancient Drama chorus of the National Theatre of Greece.

Her transition to acting was spectacular. Recognized for her exceptional raw talent, she received a special acting license and quickly established herself as a leading lady. Her first professional theatrical appearance after leaving the National Theatre was in 1958, starring alongside Dinos Iliopoulos and Mary Aroni.

Her big break came the following year. In 1959, she replaced the legendary Elli Lampeti opposite Dimitris Horn in the theatrical production of "Romanzero." This marked the beginning of a highly successful partnership, which also translated to the silver screen with the classic film "Woe to the Young" (1961).

Cinematic Legacy and the "Kokovikos" Phenomenon

Maro Kontou made her film debut in 1954 with a small role in Finos Film’s "Happy Beginning." In a scene that resembled a precursor to modern music videos, she appeared alongside another future star, Mary Chronopoulou.

Over the following decades, she starred in some of the most memorable films of Greek cinema:

  • "The Yellow Gloves" (1960)

  • "Murder in Kolonaki" (1960)

  • "My Friend Lefterakis" (1963)

  • "An Italian in Kypseli" (1968)

However, her most iconic role came in George Tzavellas' masterpiece comedy "And the Wife Shall Revere Her Husband" (1965). Alongside George Konstantinou, they portrayed the "Kokovikos" couple—one of the most famous and beloved duos in the history of Greek cinema.

Additionally, she was the ideal co-star to the legendary Lambros Konstantaras. The two shared an incredible on-screen chemistry, leading many to believe they were a couple in real life, though they were simply dear friends and exceptional collaborators.

Vocal Talent and Political Contribution

Beyond her acting prowess, Maro Kontou possessed an exceptional singing voice. She delivered memorable performances, most notably in Manos Hadjidakis’ legendary 1962 musical production "Street of Dreams" ("Odos Oneiron"), performing classic songs like "Mavri Ford" and "Adelfes Tata."

In the 1990s, she expanded her horizons into public service. As a prominent member of the New Democracy party, she served as an Athens municipal counselor under Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos and was later elected as a Member of the Greek Parliament representing Athens.

Maro Kontou lived her life with dignity, passion, and an unwavering devotion to her craft. While her passing leaves a profound void in Greek culture, her star will continue to shine bright through her timeless films for generations to come.
