New York: Greek Culture Minister Mendoni Visits The Met And The Sparta Museum


Greek Culture and Sports Minister Lina Mendoni visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York and met with the Greek and Roman Art Curator Seán Hemingway. Ms Mendoni also attended an event at the Center for Hellenic Studies 'Paideia' of the University of Connecticut (UConn), the under construction Sparta Museum and the open air Hellenic theater "Alexander the Great".

They discussed the next steps in implementing the Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) between the ministry, the Met, and the Museum of Cycladic Art, as well as expanding collaboration through exhibits with Greek museums, a ministry statement said.The MoC foresees actions such scholarships to Greek researchers, the setup of a digital corpus of data, a symposium on checking the authenticity of artworks, and a collaboration on an excavation in a prehistoric site at the Cycladic Islands, under the directorship of the Cyclades Ephorate.

At a visit to the Center for Hellenic Studies 'Paideia' of the University of Connecticut (UConn), Mendoni was bestowed with the title of Benefactor as a recognition of her long-standing and consistent support of educational activities at Paideia, and of efforst to set up the museum on ancient Sparta on the college campus.


Attending the event were Greek Ambassador to Washington Alexandra Papadopoulou, Greek Consul in New York Dimitris Papageorgiou, UConn leaders, congresspeople of Greek descent, heads of Greek organizations, as well as professors and students at the state college.


Prof. Ilias Tomazos the Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies PAIDEIA at the University of Connecticut (UCON) did a magnificent job over the decades to help create the Paideia Center at the UConn Campus, the Chapel, the Educational Building, the under construction Sparta Museum and the open air Hellenic theater "Alexander the Great".

An event at UCON was coordinated, two days ago, with the Hon. Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture and Sports from the Hellenic Republic visiting and touring the Paideia facilities mentioned and the new almost completed Spartan Museum.


The dinner later in the evening was held in her honor. Also attending the day’s events were the Hellenic Ambassador to the U.S. Hon. Alexandra Papadopoulou, Hellenic Consul in New York Demetrios Papageorgiou, Special Assistant to Hellenic Ministry of Culture Mrs. Anna Panagiotarea, Hellenic Ministry of Culture Press Officer Panagiotis Panagiopoulos, and Hellenic Ministry Assistants Dr. Elisavet Barque, Mr. Lekkas and the Greek-American well-known and always active businessman Mr. Lou Katsos.
