The eyes of the world are traditionally fixed on Times Square as the clock strikes midnight, but this year, the "Center of the Universe" is doing more than just ringing in a new calendar year. This New Year’s Eve marks the official launch of the Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the United States.

As we move into 2026, the celebration of America’s past, present, and future begins with a historic spectacle that blends tradition with a renewed sense of national pride.
A Historic First: The Surprise Post-Midnight Moment
For the first time in over a century, the traditional ball drop won't be the final act of the night. Shortly after the initial 2026 countdown, America250—the nonpartisan commission leading the anniversary—will host a surprise "second moment."
At approximately 12:04 a.m., the Times Square Ball will be relit in a stunning red, white, and blue design. This patriotic transition serves as the official starting gun for the 250th-anniversary year. The moment will be accompanied by:
Patriotic Confetti: A massive release of 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti raining down on the Crossroads of the World.
The "America Turns 250" Tribute: A special video presentation highlighting the resilience and diversity of the American story.
A Musical Salute: A pyrotechnic finale set to Ray Charles’ iconic rendition of "America the Beautiful."
Lighting Up the Future
The aesthetic shift in Times Square is more than just a temporary light show. The "2026" numerals atop One Times Square will shine brighter than ever, signaling a year dedicated to reflection and unity. This NYE event is the cornerstone of a year-long partnership between America250, the Times Square Alliance, and One Times Square.
For those visiting NYC during this historic year, the patriotic theme will remain a constant thread. The "Constellation Ball," which weighs nearly 12,000 pounds and features over 5,000 crystal triangles, will be a central icon for the millions who make the pilgrimage to 42nd Street.
Beyond New Year’s Eve: The Road to July 4th
While the countdown starts in Times Square on December 31, the momentum will only build. America250 has announced that for the first time in history, the Times Square Ball will drop again on July 3, 2026. This summer ball drop will anchor a nationwide Independence Day celebration, marking the exact 250-year milestone of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The 2026 calendar is packed with events across all 50 states, including:
America Gives: A massive national service initiative launching on NYE, aiming to make 2026 the largest year of volunteerism in U.S. history.
Etate-Led Festivals: From Philadelphia to San Francisco, local commissions are hosting parades, museum exhibits, and "Salute to America" festivals.
Educational Initiatives: A focus on "The Story of America," bringing history to life for students and families through interactive digital platforms.
Witnessing History in the Making
Whether you are standing in the middle of a crowded Broadway or watching from home, the start of the Semiquincentennial is a rare opportunity to witness history. It is a moment to celebrate the "rag-tag army" that became a global republic and to look forward to what the next 250 years might hold.
As Rosie Rios, Chair of America250, stated: "Whatever you're imagining, it's going to be much more than that." The journey to 2026 has officially begun, and there is no better place to start the clock than in the heart of New York City.
