A Vincent van Gogh painting was stolen overnight from a Dutch museum shut down as part of efforts to control the coronavirus pandemic, museum and police officials said on Monday.

The stolen painting is the oil on panel work "Spring Garden," which the artist painted in 1884.

Police said that the thieves broke through the glass front entrance of the Singer Laren Museum outside Amsterdam at about 3:15 am (0115 GMT). The break-in triggered an alarm, but by the time officials arrived the robbers had already made their escape.

The painting was on loan from another Dutch gallery, the Groninger Museum. The museums declined to say how much the painting was worth.

"A wonderful and moving painting by our greatest artist has been stolen, and taken away from our community," said Singer museum directer Jan Rudolph in a briefing broadcast online.

It is the only painting by Van Gogh in the collection of the Groninger Museum, which said in a statement online it was "shocked by the news."

"This is a theft from us all," said museum head Andreas Bluem.
