For the digital nomads from Texas who decided to leave everything behind to start a new life with their young daughter in Greece, Focus magazine made a tribute to its digital edition.
A hospital bill of more than $10,000 and a lack of support for mothers in the U.S. was ultimately the straw that broke the camel's back for Cara West and her husband Hurley. The two Americans decided to sell everything, leave Texas and start a new life with their young daughter in Greece.
They initially lived as digital nomads and traveled to 14 countries before settling on Syros. Kara works in luxury travel and earns over $136,000 a year, while Hurley stays home with the child.
"It's a dream life that I never thought was possible," Kara told CNBC. "The family enjoys the slowest pace of life and the lowest cost of living in Greece."
In fact, Kara mentions in another interview that the mass shooting at a Texas school – Robb Elementary School, in Uvalde, Austin – in May 2022, was what made her decide that it was time to take the "big step", as at the time they lived just 3 hours from Austin.
Modern "immigrants" from Germany
The article goes on to refer to Germans moving to Greece and writes:
The reasons many Germans emigrate to Greece are tax incentives, a good health system and cheap real estate, reports German financial newspaper Handelsblatt.
A German couple, for example, bought a house on Aegina during the debt crisis: "It was important for us to remain independent and unassisted for as long as possible," they told the newspaper.
Many Germans dream of living abroad. In 2023, 265,000 Germans took the plunge and emigrated.
The Federal Statistical Office published the most popular countries for Germans who want to move and their preferred countries are Switzerland, Austria, the USA, Spain and France. Turkey is in sixth place and Italy in 10th place, according to the report, while more and more German pensioners are also emigrating to Greece, according to the newspaper Handelsblatt.
