The Festive Kick-off: Syntagma Square in Christmas Fever

Newsroom

The heart of Athens has begun beating to a festive rhythm, culminating in the dazzling lighting of the Christmas tree in Syntagma Square. Despite the chilly atmosphere and the rain, Athenians, holding umbrellas in hand, turned out in force for the central event organized by the Municipality of Athens, which marked the official start of the holiday season.

The honor of lighting the tree belonged to the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, who, with the press of a button, gifted the city a spectacular show, transforming Syntagma into a bright, Christmas landscape.

The Fir Tree from Arcadia and the Glittering Ornaments

The protagonist of the night was a proud fir tree standing 19 meters tall, which traveled to the capital from Chrysovitsi, Arcadia. The tree's size and natural beauty were dramatically enhanced by the elaborate Christmas decoration:

Lighting: A total of 168,000 lights were placed both on the tree and throughout Syntagma Square, creating a sense of warmth and radiance.

Decoration: The fir tree and the surrounding area were adorned with classic red and gold baubles, as well as original ornaments made from illuminated plexiglass, adding a modern and elegant touch to the decor. Additionally, 3,000 meters of bright lights were used to illuminate the square.

The overall image reflected the commitment of the Municipality of Athens to offer citizens and visitors a striking and unforgettable festive setting.

Musical Extravaganza: From the Big Band to Panos Mouzourakis

The event, which began at 5:00 PM, unfolded into a musical show worthy of the occasion. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy:

Athens Municipality Big Band: The event started with Christmas melodies and rhythms from the Big Band, creating the perfect atmosphere.

Athens Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra: The Philharmonic followed, continuing the festive musical journey.

Panos Mouzourakis: The evening climaxed with the popular artist, Panos Mouzourakis, who took to the stage for a special Christmas live show. His warm voice and explosive temperament energized the crowd, which defied the cold to sing along with him.

The spectacle, combining music, light, and the presence of the crowd, served as a powerful reminder of the collective joy brought by the holidays.

The Fir Tree's Fate: From Celebration to Art

Of particular interest is the decision of the Municipality of Athens regarding the repurposing of the fir tree after the holidays conclude. The tree will not simply end up as waste; it will acquire a second life in an innovative way:

It will be donated to the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA).

It will be utilized as raw material for works of woodcarving by the School's students.

This move lends an ecological and artistic character to the festive choice, promoting sustainability and creativity.

Despite the rain, Athenians defied the weather, with their umbrellas forming a colorful mosaic in the square. The crowd's eagerness for the festive atmosphere and the joy of Christmas was evident, as they patiently awaited the climax of the evening.

The photographs by Panagiotis Koufalexis, as well as the videos released, captured perfectly the energy and enthusiasm of the multitude, showing that Athens was ready to embrace Christmas with splendor.
