Persian Gulf Crisis: 200 Greeks and 6,000 Passengers Stranded on Cruise Ships as Airspace Closes
By:Mara Christou
A diplomatic and logistical nightmare is unfolding in the Middle East, with 200 Greek nationals—50 tourists and 150 crew members—trapped aboard three luxury cruise ships currently docked in Dubai and Doha.
Following the escalation of military strikes against Iran and the subsequent closure of airspace across the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, the Celestyal Journey, Celestyal Discovery, and MSC Euribia have been forced to halt all operations. With major carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Aegean suspending flights, thousands of passengers have no clear path home.
According to maritime reports and updates from Piraeus-based shipping offices, the situation on the ground is as follows:
-
Celestyal Discovery (Dubai): Currently docked at Port Rashid. Local authorities have restricted disembarkation for many passengers as the city manages the sudden influx of stranded travelers.
-
Celestyal Journey (Doha): The vessel is scheduled to remain in Qatar until at least March 7. While passengers are safe, the lack of connecting flights to Europe has turned the ship into a floating waiting room.
-
MSC Euribia (Dubai): Originally scheduled to depart for Doha, the ship has remained at the pier. Passengers reported seeing drone interceptions over the Dubai skyline last night, leading to heightened security protocols on board.
The crisis hit a breaking point today when 50 Greek tourists prepared to depart from Athens for Dubai to begin their vacation, only to have their trips canceled minutes before boarding.
For those already in the Gulf, the situation is more dire. With the primary air hubs of Dubai (DXB) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) largely paralyzed, alternative flight tickets through third countries have reportedly skyrocketed to over €4,000 per person, leaving many families in financial and emotional distress.
The Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the shipping companies have issued statements emphasizing that:
-
Safety First: All 200 Greeks are safe, healthy, and in constant communication with their families.
-
Supplies: The ships are fully stocked with food, water, and medical supplies to last for several weeks if necessary.
-
Diplomatic Effort: The Greek Embassies in the UAE and Qatar are working on contingency plans for a coordinated evacuation should the airspace remain closed for an extended period.
As the "Big Wave" of military action in the region looms, the 150 Greek seafarers on board are being hailed for their professionalism in maintaining calm among the 6,000 global passengers.
