Cyprus had the lowest standarized rate of cancer related deaths, with 194 deaths for every 100.000 inhabitants in 2016, according to data released on Tuesday by Eurostat, the statistical service of the EU, on the occasion of World Cancer Day (4 February). The same rate in Greece is 249 deaths for every 100.000 inhabitants, close to the EU average.
According to Eurostat, almost 1.2 million persons died from cancer in the European Union in 2016. Cancer was responsible for over one quarter (26%) of all deaths recorded in the EU.
