Yesterday, 1 April, marked the 67th anniversary of the EOKA struggle for Cypriot independence against British rule (1955 - 1959) which was launched on April 1, 1955.

Charalambos Mouskos was one of the combatants in that struggle. When the EOKA campaign for "Enosis" (union with Hellas) broke out on April 1, Charalambos Mouskos born in Panagia in the province of Paphos became one of five leaders in charge of sabotage operations in Nicosia.

In that capacity, he was directly responsible to EOKA leader Georgios Grivas/Digenis. When Charalambos was betrayed, he took to the mountains as a guerrilla fighter forming, with Markos Drakos and others, the "Ouranos" (Sky) gang. On December 15, 1955, the group set up an ambush against a British convoy near ancient Soloi.

In the ensuing battle of Soloi Charalambros become the first EOKA guerrilla fighter to die in the struggle for Cyprus's freedom. Thousands attended his funeral and to transport his coffin to Faneromeni despite strict measures imposed by the British who savagely attacked them, and used Turkish "special police" , who tried to disperse the crowds using tear gas, batons and other means.

May his and all those who fought and died for Cyprus's freedom be eternal.
