Firefighters battle wildfire blazes on Evia for second day

The wildfire that broke out near the town of Aliveri, on the island of Evia, north of Athens, was still active today, Frida,y morning with Greek firefighters continuing to combat the fire for a second day.
A 75-year-old man has been arrested for smoking out beehives at the site where the fire started, Fire Service spokesman Yannis Artopoios told reporters.
Daybreak allowed a helicopter and four planes to join the firefighting efforts of 35 fire engines and 102 firefighters on the ground. More vehicles from local authorities had also joined and further reinforcements were expected.
At least the fire was far from a large power plant in the area, although it was about 2 kilometers from the village of Kalentzi but winds were rather weak.
The blaze has now advanced to within 2km of the village of Kaletzi. As of now, there have been no reports of evacuations.
The prevailing winds in the area are blowing at a speed of 2-3 beauforts.
A total of 87 firefighters, along with 21 fire engines, are currently engaged in operations in the affected area. They are being supported by numerous municipal water trucks and heavy earthmoving machinery.
Two years ago, in 2021, Evia has suffered devastating forest fires that destroyed about a third of its forest cover.
