Last week, the Italian Senate ratified the agreement with Greece to delineate the maritime zones of the two countries.

The deal was signed in Athens last year and was approved in the Italian senate by 223 votes and two abstentions.

As Greece has already ratified it, the agreement will go into effect shortly.

The demarcation of maritime zones between Greece and Italy has been pending since 1977 and changes the data regarding the demarcation of maritime zones with Albania.

“This agreement, which is expected to enter into force in the near future, reaffirms the commitment of both Greece and almost all of its neighbouring countries to international law, and in particular to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which reflects customary law, and which all countries have an obligation to respect and enforce,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
