Marianna B. Vardinogiannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and great philanthropist, passed away

Marianna B. Vardinogiannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, great philanthropist and active member in many charities, passed away at the age of 80 in Athens on Monday. Marianna B. Vardinogiannis has changed the lives for the better and saved many children suffering from cancer in Greece.

Ms Vardinogiannis has been hospitalized recently in a private hospital and her health condition deteriorated to the extreme extent that she had to be put on mechanical support.
 
Neither her hospitalization nor her health problems were leaked to the press.
 
Marianna Vardinogiannis, wife of the Greek billionaire Vardis Vardinogiannis, was born in Athens, grew up in Ermioni, western Peloponnese, and studied economics at the University of Denver, Colorado.
 
She was a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and an activist for the rights of children and their families and against the sexual abuse of children.

Her charity organization "ELPIDA" (HOPE) has saved the lives of over 1,000 children suffering from cancer in Greece and she had contributed with more than 50 million Euros (around 55 million $) supporting the suffering children and their families.
 
In 2020, Marianna Vardinogiannis was awarded the Nelson Mandela Prize.
 
She was also active as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Library of Alexandria, the International Women’s Movement for Peace, the International Center for Missing and Abused Children (ICMEC), the Mentor Anti-Drug Foundation, Founding Member of the “Light of Africa” Foundation led by His Beatitude Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria, Member of the Presidential Council of “Special Olympics Europe-Eurasia”, etc.
 
Marianna Vardinogiannis will always be remembered as a great woman, a great Greek and a great philanthropist!
