Government Reshuffle in Greece: Prime Minister Mitsotakis Introduces New Cabinet Members
Newsroom
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced targeted adjustments to his administration, appointing seasoned parliamentary figures to key ministries. This mini-reshuffle aims to refresh the administration while strengthening critical portfolios, including tax policy, transportation, and European affairs.
The timing of the announcement was accelerated following the resignation of Efthymios Bakoyannis, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, due to a relative's involvement in an urban planning scandal. Additionally, internal party adjustments prompted the transition of Konstantinos Kyranakis, who steps down from his government post to become the General Secretary of the ruling New Democracy party.
The newly announced changes focus on four major ministerial positions:
Ministry of Transportation: George Kotsiras takes on the role of Alternate Minister, bringing extensive experience from previous government positions. He replaces Konstantinos Kyranakis.
Ministry of National Economy and Finance:Dimitris Markopoulos enters the cabinet for the first time as Deputy Minister in charge of Tax Policy. His selection relies on his strong legislative background and years of professional experience in financial journalism.
Ministry of Environment and Energy: Marilena Soukouli is appointed Deputy Minister. Representing the Corinthia constituency, she fills the seat left vacant by the late Nikos Tagaras, bringing her professional background as an engineer to the ministry.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Tasos Chatzivasileiou, a close advisor to the Prime Minister on international relations, becomes Deputy Minister responsible for European Affairs. He will oversee critical portfolios ahead of Greece's upcoming presidency of the European Union.
The official swearing-in ceremony for the new ministers is scheduled for Friday, June 12, before the President of the Hellenic Republic, Constantine Tassoulas.
While several deputy minister positions saw changes, the Maximos Mansion opted for continuity in its core communications team. Pavlos Marinakis remains firmly in place as the government spokesperson. He retains the full confidence of Prime Minister Mitsotakis to manage daily briefings and articulate government policy through the remainder of the administration's term.
Concurrently, the appointment of Dimitris Markopoulos to the executive branch triggers changes within the Hellenic Parliament. Member of Parliament Stratos Simopoulos will succeed Markopoulos as the new parliamentary spokesperson for the New Democracy party.
