The case reached the Greek prosecution authorities through a report filed by the competent UN bodies, initially with the European Public Prosecutor's Office. The file, however, was forwarded to the Greek Prosecutor's Office of First Instance as the amounts embezzled are not European funds and thus the case does not fall within the jurisdiction of the European Public Prosecutor.
A prosecutor's investigation was conducted into the case, which resulted in the prosecution of the UN employee on felony charges of fraud and forgery, offences for which the accused will be summoned to testify before the examining magistrate handling the case.
According to sources, the case file indicates that the UN employee, who held an important position and managed large sums of money at the UN, allegedly submitted fabricated expense reports using fraudulent documents, embezzling large sums of money. By this means, she is estimated to have collected a total amount exceeding one million dollars over a period from 2014 until 2021.
