May 11th remains a milestone date for Hellenism in America and Orthodoxy worldwide. Today marks seven years since that morning in 2019 when the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Phanar, under the inspired leadership of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, unanimously elected the then Metropolitan of Prusa, Elpidophoros, as the new Archbishop of America.

His election was not merely an administrative act to fill a vacant throne. It was the Phanar’s definitive response to the modern challenges facing one of the most vital eparchies of the Ecumenical Throne, signaling the start of a period of rebirth, spiritual uplift, and administrative restructuring.

The election of Archbishop Elpidophoros arrived at a moment when the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America required a fresh vision and dynamic leadership. Having served for years as the Chief Secretary of the Holy and Sacred Synod and as the Abbot of the Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity on Halki, His Eminence brought to the United States a profound theological background, diplomatic savvy, and an uncompromising devotion to the Mother Church of Constantinople.
From the first moment of his arrival in New York, the Archbishop prioritized unity. His message was clear: the Church is the home of everyone. Looking through the archival photography of his ministry released for this anniversary, we see the face of a leader who did not hesitate to stand beside the average member of the faithful, the youth, and the institutional pillars of the American political scene.

Major Milestones: Saint Nicholas and Education
One of the most significant achievements of his seven-year tenure is undoubtedly the completion and opening of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero. After years of delays and uncertainty, Archbishop Elpidophoros managed to mobilize the Omogenia, ensure financial transparency, and deliver a symbol of faith and Orthodox presence in the heart of New York City. Saint Nicholas stands today as a radiant beacon, reminding the world of the resilience and strength of Hellenism.
Concurrently, great weight has been placed on education. The support provided to Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston has been decisive. His Eminence recognized early on that the future of Orthodoxy in America depends on the cultivation of new clergy and the preservation of the Greek language and identity among the younger generations of Greek Americans.

Social Action and International Presence
The Archpastoral ministry of Archbishop Elpidophoros has not been confined within the walls of the cathedral. With courage and conviction, he has taken stands on critical social issues, advocating for human rights, equality, and justice, following the example of his great predecessors. His participation in peaceful demonstrations and his interventions regarding environmental protection and the rights of vulnerable social groups have showcased the Church as a living, breathing participant in American society.
On the diplomatic front, his interactions with the leadership of the United States, including meetings at the White House, have enhanced the prestige of the Archdiocese and promoted the righteous causes of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Greece, and Cyprus. The Archbishop has functioned as a vital bridge connecting Washington D.C. with the Phanar, ensuring that the voice of the Greek American community is heard at the highest levels of decision-making.

The Vision for the Future
As he completes seven years, Archbishop Elpidophoros looks toward the future with optimism and a deep sense of responsibility. The challenges of the digital age, the need for further strengthening of local parishes, and the preservation of Hellenic heritage in an ever-changing landscape remain his top priorities.
This anniversary is not just a celebration of the person of the Archbishop, but a celebration for the entire Archdiocese of America. It is a confirmation that Orthodoxy in the U.S. possesses the vigor and spiritual guidance necessary to continue serving its people.
