After the strongest tremor of 5.2 on the Richter scale at 21:09 (local time), the Institute of Geodynamics recorded six more earthquakes of more than 4 on the Richter scale between 04:00 and 05:30 (local time).
"In total from yesterday at 12.30 until today we have more than 100 earthquakes of all sizes," Efthimis Lekkas said on Thursday morning. "All this activity is at a good level and it's positive because as the days go by and we have such intense seismicity, it means that energy is released."
However, Vasilis Karastathis expressed a contrary opinion a little later: "We are still in the middle of the road," he argued. "We haven't seen any dilution, any sign that it's on the way out."
For his part, the Director of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, Vasilis Karastathis, spoke of "stabilization" of the rate of seismic activity, clarifying however that the 5.2 Richter earthquake does not change the picture. "This event is part of the swarm, and the same would be true with a 5.4 magnitude earthquake."
"The earthquake must rise close to 6 on the Richter scale," says Professor of Tectonic Geology and Geodynamics, Dimitris Papanikolaou.
