The 2024 New York City Marathon featured two very regular races, in which victory was not decided until the last straight. The route was particularly difficult and demanding compared to other major cities such as Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin and Chicago.
The 33-year-old Kenyan, who competed for the first time in New York, beat compatriot Helen Obiri, who came to New York to defend her title. However, Chepkirui finished with a time of 2:24:35, achieving her first marathon victory after finishing second in Berlin and fourth place in London the previous year. Obiri, who won Olympic bronze at the 2024 Paris Marathon, finished in 2:24:49.
"When we were about 600 metres to get there, I told myself I need to push harder. When I saw that Helen wasn't coming, I knew I was going to win and I was so happy," said the winner.
In the men's event, 35-year-old Dutchman Nageye took first place in New York, following previous triumphs in Rotterdam and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Nageye had to fight hard until the end to leave Kenya's Evans Chebet behind and finish first with a time of 2:07:39. Chebet, winner of the previous New York City Marathon, finished in 2:07:45. Ethiopian Tamirat Tola, who won last year, finished fourth in 2:08:12.
"At the finish I was like, am I dreaming? I won New York," said Nageye, who had run the race three times before. "It was two things: to survive this race and to think like a cyclist, survive 36km and you will win," he added.
