The Castle of Leros dominates the top of the Pitiki hill, at a height of about 200 meters above the sea, on the northeastern side of the island. It is also called the Castle of the Virgin Mary because according to a legend an icon of the Virgin Mary appeared from the sea on the island and was miraculously installed in the gunpowder warehouse of the castle between two lit candles, despite the efforts of the Turkish "aga" to remove it.

To get to the Castle of Panagia or Panteli Castle there is an easy road by car or motorbike and several signs to lead you there. Of course you can always ask the locals for directions, who are always smiling and helpful.
After passing the Mills (remember to make a stop there for a delicious cocktail afterwards), you reach the top of the hill where you park and from there you climb the stairs to the Castle.
Once you enter the Castle you will be enchanted both by the Castle and its stone alleys as well as by the stunning view!
We suggest you go there just before sunset to admire a wonderful sunset.
Inside the Castle there is also the church of Panagia, beautiful, austere and well-maintained, waiting for you to light a candle and why not make a wish or prayer to the Great Mother, the Virgin Mary.
Going downhill, a stop at Harris is a must, the wonderful bar-restaurant in the courtyard of one of the windmills. Apart from the lovely coctails Harri's place offers spectacular views.
Leaving, if it's now dark, you will enjoy the view of the Castle illuminated at the top, the illuminated windmills and the two natural harbors, the bay of Agia Marina and the Bay of Panteli, which in the summer are beautifully illuminated by the dozens of boats that find shelter there.
Enjoy Leros island!
