The European Union is to stop all non-essential foreign travel into the bloc for 30 days to curb the new coronavirus, European Council President Charles Michel said on Tuesday.

"We agreed to enforce our external borders by applying a coordinated temporary restriction of non-essential travel to the EU," Michel said in Brussels after an emergency video summit of EU leaders.
Under a proposal set out previously by the European Commission, exemptions to the ban would apply to long-term EU residents, family members of EU nationals, diplomats and some health care workers.
In addition, EU leaders "will do whatever it takes" to help with the economic fallout from the new coronavirus, Michel added.
