A Life Beside Lindsey Graham: The New Senator’s Background
While Darline Graham Nordone had no prior career in active politics, she has long been a familiar and beloved figure in the state's political circles, largely due to her unbreakable bond with her late brother.
A Touching Family Story
Born and raised in Central, South Carolina, Nordone’s early life was marked by sudden tragedy. At just 13 years old, she lost both of her parents within a span of 15 months. Her older brother, Lindsey Graham—who was about nine years her senior—immediately stepped in as her legal guardian. He later legally adopted her to ensure she would receive medical and military benefits as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
"He was a brother, a father, and a mother to me all rolled into one," she previously shared, describing the man who dedicated his early adulthood to raising her.
Professional and Public Service
Professionally, Nordone initially worked as an optician before transitioning to public service within various South Carolina state agencies. Notably, she dedicated much of her career to the South Carolina Commission for the Blind and was actively involved in programs aimed at supporting and employing individuals with disabilities.
Though she is a mother of two who has historically preferred to keep a low public profile, she was a constant presence on her brother's campaign trails, often introducing him at major political events and serving as his closest confidante.
"An Honor in Memory of My Brother"
Following the sudden passing of Lindsey Graham, Governor McMaster’s decision—fully backed by President Trump—is widely seen as the ultimate tribute to the late Senator's political legacy.
In a brief statement, Darline Graham Nordone expressed that she considers the appointment a profound honor in memory of her brother. She made it clear that her primary goal during this interim period is to ensure stable representation for South Carolina and to carry forward the work and values that Lindsey Graham spent his life championing.
