The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, told US President Donald Trump that Israel will maintain the freedom to act against threats in Lebanon during a telephone conversation yesterday regarding a potential agreement between Washington and Iran, according to an Israeli source.
President Trump stated that Washington and Tehran have negotiated extensively on a memorandum of understanding for a peace agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime passage that has been closed since the start of the US-Israel war in Iran in February.
In last night's conversation with President Trump, the Prime Minister emphasized that Israel will maintain the freedom of action against threats in all fields, including Lebanon, and President Trump reiterated and supported this principle, an Israeli political source who requested anonymity told Reuters today.
Expectations have risen that a major development may soon occur in the three-month-old war, as Trump stated that an agreement, mediated by Pakistan, would reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian news agency Fars reported that the plan stipulates that the US and its allies will not attack Iran or its allies, and in return, Iran commits to not carrying out preemptive attacks against them.
Prominent Israeli politician Benny Gantz stated that it would be a strategic mistake for Israel to accept a ceasefire in Lebanon, where its troops have entered to fight the pro-Iranian Hezbollah, as part of a deal with Iran.
According to the Israeli source, the US is keeping Israel informed regarding the negotiations with Iran.
President Trump made it clear that he will be unyielding during the negotiations in his firm demand for the dismantling of the Iranian nuclear program and the removal of all enriched uranium from its territory, the source told Reuters and Agence France-Presse, adding that he will not sign any final agreement without these terms being met.
Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that a phone call with Netanyahu went very well.
