Constantinople, October 22, 2025 – Today, October 22, 2025, marks 34 years since the election of the Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to the Throne of Phanar.

Chisten Papas

His journey is not merely a chronicle of a tenure, but the narrative of a transformation: one that, amidst instability, placed the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the center of global spiritual, ethical, and environmental discourse.

The Birth of Global Leadership: From Imbros to the International Stage

Demetrios Archontonis was born on New Year's Eve, February 29, 1940, on the island of Imbros, a Greek oasis within a challenging Turkish environment that made the minority's existence difficult. This early experience taught him the art of survival, patience, and the preservation of identity under pressure.
His spiritual formation has always been ecumenical. After high school in Imbros, he attended the Theological School of Halki. His specialization in Canon Law, completed with postgraduate studies at various universities (including Rome and Germany), provided him with the legal and theological arsenal to manage complex inter-state and inter-Christian relations. Before his election, he served as Metropolitan of Chalcedon, already bearing the burden of responsibility for the most important inter-Balkan and inter-Christian dialogues.
His election on October 22, 1991, found him at the ideal age and with the necessary experience, ready to lead Orthodoxy in a world that was just opening up after the fall of the Berlin Wall—a world that required spiritual leaders to be global diplomats as well.

The Character: Faith, Kindness, and the Ecological Vision

What characterizes the ministry of Patriarch Bartholomew is a unique, balanced combination:
Unwavering Faith and Pastoral Kindness: The Patriarch is the embodiment of strict Orthodox Tradition. However, his leadership is marked by pastoral kindness and openness. He never ceased to defend doctrine but chose the path of dialogue with every institution, every religion, and every person. His love for his fellow man and the recognition of shared humanity have often served as bridges over doctrinal chasms.
Spirit of Pioneering and the "Green Patriarch": The most revolutionary aspect of his leadership was the recognition of the Environmental Crisis as a theological, rather than merely social or political, responsibility. He was the first religious leader globally to place the issue at the core of his mission. Through dozens of interfaith dialogues and scientific meetings, he highlighted creation as the "House of God" that must be protected, justly earning him the epithet "Green Patriarch."

Historic Honors on the International Stage

The Patriarch's commitment to global peace, interfaith dialogue, and the protection of minorities has earned him recognition from the most powerful political and spiritual institutions:
U.S. Congressional Gold Medal (1997): This highest honor from the U.S. Congress sealed the recognition of his role as a global factor of stability.
Templeton Prize (2025): The recent announcement and award of the Templeton Prize (September 2025, New York), considered the "Nobel of spirituality," confirmed the global reach of his work in bridging Faith with Science and the modern world.
Meetings with World Leaders: His diplomacy has borne fruit in high-level meetings. Special mention is made of the "warm" meeting in September 2025 with President Donald Trump at the White House, where key issues concerning the Theological School of Halki and the persecution of Christians were raised. Similar recognition was received from the current U.S. administration, with President Joe Biden having likened him in public speeches to the global moral stature of Nelson Mandela.

Milestones of the Governing Period (1991 – 2025)

His Patriarchal tenure is characterized by boldness and major administrative efforts:
The Holy and Great Council (2016): After centuries of preparation and disagreements, Patriarch Bartholomew managed to convene the first Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church since 787 AD.
This achievement stands as his paramount administrative success, laying the foundations for unity in a new era.
Autocephaly of Ukraine (2019): His decision to grant the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine remains his most daring and perhaps most controversial act. While it strengthened the Patriarchate's presence on the geopolitical stage, it caused the deep schism with the Moscow Patriarchate, a crisis the Church is called to manage to this day.

The Legacy: Defending Humanity and Creation

In his 34 years of ministry, Patriarch Bartholomew has never ceased to fight for the survival of Hellenism and Orthodoxy in their historical center, Phanar, while simultaneously placing the Church at the forefront of global challenges.
Eis polla eti Despota!
As time passes and trials remain undiminished—from pressures in Constantinople to geopolitical turmoil—the figure of Patriarch Bartholomew remains synonymous with inexhaustible ministry, persistence in dialogue, and the prophetic voice warning the world of the consequences of straying from spiritual and ecological truth. History will record him as the Patriarch who kept the Phanar shining brightly, leading it into a new kind of global pastorship.
