This move, announced by the French Ministry of Defense on February 20, 2026, comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension involving Russia and shifting strategic interests in the Arctic region.
The "Lafayette 2" Mission and NATO Exercises
After departing from Toulon on January 27 and participating in the massive French exercise "Orion 26", the carrier strike group is now executing the "Lafayette 2" mission. This deployment is designed to bolster European security and demonstrate interoperability with allied forces.
Key highlights of the mission include
-
Historic Port Call: On February 25, the Charles de Gaulle is expected to dock in Malmö, Sweden. This marks the first time the carrier will visit this Swedish port, signaling deepening defense ties within the Baltic region.
-
Baltic Sentry: The French fleet will join NATO's mission to protect critical undersea infrastructure following recent incidents of cable damage suspected to be orchestrated by Moscow.
-
Multinational Drills: The strike group will participate in several major NATO exercises, including Steadfast Dart, Neptune Strike, and Norway’s Cold Response.
-
Securing the Arctic and North Atlantic
The deployment coincides with the launch of NATO’s "Arctic Sentry" mission. This initiative aims to enhance security in the Arctic Circle—a region increasingly contested due to the regular operations of Russia's Northern and Baltic submarine fleets.
Furthermore, the presence of the French flagship provides a strategic counterweight in the North Atlantic, particularly following recent discussions by the U.S. administration regarding interests in Greenland.
A Truly International Task Force
While led by France, the carrier strike group functions as a multinational "Task Force." The Charles de Gaulle, equipped with Rafale Marine fighter jets, is supported by a robust escort including:
-
Frigates and supply ships.
-
A nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN).
-
Integrated warships from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Morocco, the UK, Norway, Denmark, and Germany.
This deployment serves not only as a formidable combat force but also as a vital tool for strategic and diplomatic communication among Western allies.
