The Russian daredevil couple who caused an uproar after reaching the top of the Empire State Building to stage a marriage proposal at a dizzying height has been released.
According to evidence presented on Thursday at the Manhattan Criminal Court, the couple—who reside in New Jersey—allegedly broke a lock on a security door on the 104th floor, which provides access to the building's broadcast antenna.
The rescue operation by authorities proved to be extremely complex and dangerous. Investigators revealed that the antenna was emitting high-frequency radio signals, which are powerful enough to cause bodily harm. The NYPD had to wait 30 minutes for the antenna to be deactivated before Emergency Service Unit members could approach the pair. Officials believe the two climbers had been observing staff movements and likely used an employee entrance to bypass security.

Angelina Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov are facing multiple felony charges, including reckless endangerment and burglary. Despite the serious charges, the couple appeared in court wearing the same black clothes they wore during their "performance," remaining calm and smiling.
"We love New York," they said as they left the courthouse. Kuznetsov added that he felt he had to "do something special for his engagement." Their attorney, Jason Krinsky, argued that the District Attorney's office "overcharged the case," adding, "They're trying to send a message. From what I've seen, and I'm sure what you've all seen, it was a message of love."

The father of Nikolau claimed that the couple was already married and that "the whole thing was just a performance."
The couple, who pleaded not guilty, will return to court on August 24. Until then, they remain under supervision as the case continues.
