January 4, 2026 finds New York at the center of an unprecedented geopolitical storm.

Just two days after his inauguration, the city’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, found himself confronting a decision by President Donald Trump that is reshaping the course of events: the military operation dubbed “Resolute Determination” and the arrest of Nicolás Maduro Moros.
Maduro’s transfer to Manhattan to stand trial on narco-terrorism charges triggered an immediate and forceful response from Mamdani, who turned City Hall into a stronghold of resistance against the White House’s foreign policy.
“An Act of War” and a Phone Clash
Zohran Mamdani did not limit himself to routine statements. In a move that drew wide attention, he revealed that he personally called President Donald Trump to express his outright opposition. The mayor described the arrest of Nicolás Maduro Moros as an “act of war” and a “blatant violation of international law,” arguing that no country has the right to invade a sovereign nation to impose “regime change.”
“I expressed to the President my opposition to this military adventurism. New York cannot be used as a backdrop for illegal interventions,” Mamdani said. Trump, for his part, has remained defiant, stating that the United States will “run” Venezuela until a smooth transition is secured, while allegations tied to fentanyl and the Cartel of the Suns form the basis of the case that will be heard in New York.
Protecting New York’s Venezuelan Community
For Zohran Mamdani, the issue is deeply local. New York is home to tens of thousands of Venezuelans, many of whom have arrived in recent years seeking refuge. The mayor stressed that Nicolás Maduro Moros’ presence in a federal detention facility in Manhattan puts the safety of these people at risk and further polarizes the city.
While Trump promises that Maduro’s fall will restore prosperity and allow American oil companies to “fix” Venezuela, Mamdani warns of the humanitarian consequences of what he called a new “colonial” approach.
What Comes Next: Justice or Political Spectacle?
The trial of Nicolás Maduro Moros is expected to begin soon under strict security measures. Zohran Mamdani has already instructed the city’s police to remain on alert for potential demonstrations, while continuing to challenge the legality of the process. For the new mayor, this crisis is the first major test of his term, placing him on a direct collision course with a president who does not hesitate to use military power to enforce his vision of “America First.”
